USB Mass Storage mode in Nexus 7 MTP

advertisement

USB Mass Storage mode has been missing from Google devices like Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 etc with Android version newer than 3.0. USB Mass Storage Mode is replaced by MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).

Do you need USB Mass Storage Option in Nexus 7?
Nexus 7 has 2 USB modes to connect to computer. MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol). You can use MTP mode instead of USB Mass Storage mode to transfer photos, videos, music etc.

Windows Vista & Windows 7 natively support MTP mode. If you are using Windows XP, you need to have Windows Media Player 10 or later. Mac OS does not support MTP mode. But you can install android file transfer on Mac OS to enable transferring of data via MTP.

You can transfer files via WiFi between computer & android devices like Nexus 7 or Galaxy S2, S3 etc using android apps like Kies Air, Air Droid etc. You don’t even need to use USB cable if you use WiFi.

You can also stream media from Nexus 7 to computer without using any cables. USB Mass storage mode is taken out in newer versions of android for a good reason in support of MTP.

    What is this “good reason”?

I seen no reason that MTP cannot be the default – it can be safer in some cases. However REMOVING usb mass storage is a giant step backwards in many cases…

  2. I have Windows Media Player 11 and XP and my PC doesn’t recognize Nexus when I connect with USB cable. Google Nexus customer service don’t know what to do. Any ideas?

  3. MTP is a piece of shit, you cannot copy large files, you cannot copy whatever you like on your device…

First WTF, Google doesnt support SD Card… who the fuck thought that adding a 20c component into that hardware would be a problem. I guess it is all about $$$

Second WTF, removing the mass storage and forcing to use the MTP which fails to copy movies bigger than a certain size.

I don’t have a wifi connection at the office available to my tablet for security reasons, i want to copy my files over USB… Do i have to copy them to google drive and sync at home?????

    Shame on them.
