How to setup & use RDP Remote Desktop client on android phone/tablet like Nexus 7, Galaxy S4


Microsoft announced android app to access windows computer using remote desktop client. Windows PCS have built in Remote Desktop option that lets you access from other Computers etc. Now, You can use Microsoft RDP client from your android phone or tablet.

There are other popular android apps that let you access Windows machines but you need to install additional software on the Computer to use them. If you have Remote Desktop enabled on the computer, You can access it from anywhere.

How to setup & use Remote Desktop Client on android phone/tablet like Nexus 7, Galaxy S3/S3 etc

1. On your Windows Computer, enable Remote Desktop option. This is disabled by default.

On Windows 7, Go to Control Panel > System > Click on “Allow Remote Access” > check “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication” > Click OK.

This will enable Remote Desktop service on your Windows Computer.

2. On your android phone or tablet, Download & Install Microsoft Remote Desktop android app from Google Play Store.

3. Open the android app > Tap + to add new Connection details. Enter your Computer name, username, password and save it. Tap on the connection to connect to it.

If you get Connection error, Host not found. Try entering your computer IP address. You can find it by using ipconfig cmd on the cmd prompt.

4. After successful connection, You will see your computer screen. You can zoom in by tapping Zoom icon.

If you tap on your session name (ex: Work in the below image), You will get menu at the bottom. You can open Start Menu by tapping on the Start icon. You can access other controls like Ctrl, Shift, F1, F2 keys etc.

If you are accessing it on smaller screen like android phone, You can see mouse pointer by tapping icon pointed by arrow. This is next to Tab icon.

You can expect to get other features like Pinch to Zoom etc in the later versions. It works on most android phones & tablets including Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Note 8.0, Note 10.1, Note 2, Galaxy S4, S3, Nexus 4, HTC One, Xperia Z etc.
