Hotmail was the first popular email service. Micorsoft introduced outlook.com more recently. If you converted your hotmail.com or live.com account to outlook.com or still using hotmail.com, you can follow below methods to configure email on your android device.

Method 1: How to setup hotmail or outlook.com on any android phone or tablet like Nexus 7
Hotmail android app is available from Google Play Store. It works any android device later than android 2.1. It works on Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean android OS.

Install Hotmail android app & open it to enter your email address, password. Make sure to enter full email address including @hotmail.com or @live.com or @outlook.com. It should retrieve your email messages. It also pushes new email messages to you immediately. It also can sync your hotmail contacts, calendar with your android device. This method works on all android phones including samsung galaxy s2, galaxy s3, galaxy note, droid razr etc & android tablets including Nexus 7, Samsung Tab etc.

Method 2: How to setup hotmail or outlook.com on any android phone/tablet using android Email app with Exchange
If you don’t want above hotmail app, you can just use default Email app thats found in applications on your android device.

a. Go to Application > Email > Email Setup Screen. If you already setup another email account already, Go to Apps > Email > Menu > Settings > Add new email account.
b. Enter your hotmail or outlook email address & password, it should automatically get the settings. It worked on my Samsung Galaxy S2. But on my Nexus 7, I had to do it manually. Follow below steps to set it up manually.

Manual Setup
a. Enter your hotmail or outlook.com account email address & password on Email setup account screen & Tap on “Manual setup”.

b. Tap on Exchange option. Hotmail & Outlook.com does not have IMAP support. POP3 is not normally recommeded. You will have more control if you use Exchange option. You may see “Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync” depending on the android OS you are using. Select that option if you see that.

c. Enter full email address for Domain\Username as shown in the image. Enter m.hotmail.com for server. Keep all other default settings as shown in the screenshot. It should connect to server & get your email now.

Thats it. Your email should sync with your android device.

Method 3: How to setup hotmail or outlook.com on any android phone/tablet using android Email app with POP3
You should use method #2 above with Exchange option. If you want to use POP3 option for whatever reason, you can do that too.

a. Go to Application > Email > Email Setup Screen. If you already setup another email account already, Go to Apps > Email > Menu > Settings > Add new email account.
b. Enter your hotmail or outlook.com email address & password. Tap on “Manual Setup” & Select POP3 option.
c. Enter POP3 Incoming Server settings as shown in the below screenshot. Enter your full address for username, enter pop3.live.com for pop3 server, select ssl or ssl/tls & server port number 995.

d. Enter SMTP outgoing Server settings as shown in the below screenshot. Enter smtp.live.com for smtp server, select STARTTLS or TLS for security type, enter port number 587.

That should be it. You can send & receive emails using POP3 & smtp.

  1. I recently discovered that my Hotmail setting on my Samsung Galaxy S2 has changed and now sent emails no longer show my NAME, but the from line just says my Hotmail address. In the settings on my phone, I discovered that the tab for Name pops in and then disappears. Other emails like Gmail and others are Ok and show the Name Tab. I have installed and uninstalled Hotmail with no success. This problem seems to exist also on my Samsung Galaxy Tab2. Is there a simple fix? Thanks

    • Ditto – exactly as Said described. Outgoing name on Hotmail account cannot be changed in Android mail settings on Samsung’s recently jellybean release. This is extremely problematic since it email received from my Samsung Android is no longer sent with my personal name — only my Hotmail login name.

Please, anyone have a fix for this somewhat large backward step by Samsung (this problem does not occur in ICS).
