If you try to open PDF mail attachments in IE10 browser on Windows Phone like Lumia 920 or HTC 8x, you will see a message like “If there are images in this attachment, they will not be displayed.” message.

I got the same error message on Lumia 920. I tried to open attached pdf document in gmail using Internet Explorer browser. It seems to display pdf file as text.

How to open file attachments in email on Windows Phone 8
This message seems to be displayed because it can’t open the file attachment using Adobe Reader. There are 2 workarounds to fix this message.

Method 1:
Internet Explorer browser gets mobile version of the websites. You can change it to get desktop version of the websites. You can do this by opening IE on windows phone > going to menu options > scroll down to see settings > tap on settings > Tap on “website preference” > select desktop version.

Go to email message again and try opening the PDF attachment. It should open the document now. Make sure you have Adobe PDF Reader app installed. You will also get option to save the original pdf document to phone.

Method 2:
If you don’t want to change website preference option in IE 10, you need to read email using “add email account” on Windows Phone instead of in the browser.

Go to Settings (slide to left on the home screen) > email + accounts > add an account > add email account like Google for Gmail. You should be able to view pdf attachments this way.

This should work on any Windows Phone including Lumia 920, Lumia 820, Lumia 810, HTC 8X, Samsung Ativ etc
