10 Nov 2009The Droid advertisement was probably the most audacious and aggressive attack on the iPhone 3GS yet: “iDon’t take night shots, iDon’t allow open development … everything iDon’t, DroidDoes.”
Well, that’s a pretty tall claim, to say the least. Let us see what Droid does have and what it does not:

Comparison:
1. Camera: Droidhas a 5mp camera vis-à-vis the 3 mp camera in the iPhone 3g.
2. Droid uses the updated Android 2.0 OS, while iPhone is fuelled by the Mac OS.
Carrier: Droid runs on the Verizon Wireless, who happen to be At & T’s biggest rival, who happen to be the iPhone’s chosen carrier.
3. The touchscreen debate: Like most non-iPhone smartphones, Droid has both a physical keyboard and a touchscreen. Yes, that means it does sacrifice the iPhone’s uber sleekness, but it is probably more handy to use.
4. Memory: Droid offers 16GB memory, which is extendable up to 32GB. The iPhone 3GS will only give you as much as 16GB.
5. Battery: And finally, the iPhone battery. As every iPhone user will tell you, if there is one feature that they desperately want to be changed for the iPhone, it is the battery. Droid does a far better job here (Battery life: 6.4 hours talk time +270 hours of stand by).
6. Price: Quite interestingly, noth these smart phones have exactly the same price plans. Both are available for $199.99 and both have exactly the same data plan, albeit through different carriers.
Common factors: Well, you expect that from every smartphone these days – high speed, high resolution, video recording and support for various tunes and smart GPS features like digital compass etc.
The killer factor: The App Store. Well, this is what sets the iPhone apart from any other smart phone and will continue to for a while at least. The 1 billion (and increasing) app avalanche is hard to beat. The Android market, as of now, is lagging way behind with merely about 13,000 apps.
Verdict: Well, Droid is a neat phone. A pretty smart one in fact. But it is not an iPhone killer. Yes, the Android army together might be having a better market. But the iconic iPhone is to stay here, for quite a while, before any phone dethrones it. The Droid does not exactly make you jump off your seat, ahem, it is not exactly out of the Star Wars movie series, neither is it an iPhoen killer, but it does pack a punch.
