How to Uninstall Ubuntu from Dual-Boot Windows Environment Safely

Windows is one environment which allows you to install multiple operating systems on a single computer easily. If you have installed Ubuntu Linux on your system with Windows on it then it will be tricky to get Ubuntu uninstall. But there is a way where you can safely uninstall Ubuntu while you also backup important files that you have stored on Ubuntu file system. Within just few minutes you can uninstall Ubuntu and start using windows as usually. Here are the steps and process you need to follow to uninstall Ubuntu safely.

First Backup Ubuntu files

If you are using Ubuntu for a time on your system then you might have some important files that you do not want to lose. You can backup these files on to any external storage device like thumb drive, CD/DVD or to another Windows partition.

First launch Ubuntu normally and copy important files that you want to backup to any external device to make sure they are safe. If you are not able to launch normally then you can take help of ext2 IFS drivers to access Ubuntu file system from Windows and backup files on it.

Uninstall Ubuntu completely

Now you will have to restart your system if you have backed up files from Ubuntu itself and launch Windows operating system when prompted.

You can completely remove Ubuntu from your computer by simple deleting the partitions allotted for Ubuntu.

For doing this you have to follow these steps.

  • Right Click on the My Computer icon and click on Manage
  • From the Computer Management screen select Disk Management option present towards left side
  • Now you can see all the partitions present on your hard drive
  • In this screen select the Linux partitions, you can know them easily by their drive number or simply Windows do not recognize them.
  • Click on the Ubuntu partitions and delete them. Make sure you delete correct partitions and double check if you have selected any windows partitions.
  • This will completely remove Ubuntu from your system.

As this process will also remove GRUB which is very much need to boot into Windows operating system. You will have to restore these files again into Windows through Windows operating system CD/DVD.

Restore Master Boot Record/GRUB

  • Insert your Windows operating system CD/DVD into the CD ROM and select repair option from the list.
  • From the recovery console type fixmbr in the command prompt.

This process will restore Windows MBR such that you can boot into Windows smoothly.

Add deleted partitions to Windows

You need to restart your computer now and boot into Windows OS. The partitions which you have used to install Ubuntu cannot be read by Windows automatically. So you will have to add these partitions into Windows to use the free space available on the hard disc.

  • Launch Disk Management window like said before
  • In this window you can see partitioned space and unpartitioned space.
  • Right click on the unparitioned space and click on the new partition option.
  • In this screen you can specify the space you want to create for the new partition as per your need or you add this space to any other existing partition.
  • Follow the instructions on screen to create new partition when you are done you can use all the free space available on your hard disk from Windows OS.

With this step the process of uninstalling Ubuntu OS from your computer is finished so you can continue using your system on Windows OS smoothly.
