In order to reset the administrator’s password for windows computer there are several approaches or ways of dealing with it. The notion of most of the people who encounter this kind of a problem is that they have to reinstall their operating system. But this is not necessary always.

The following are a couple of methods to be followed in order to recover Windows password.

1) When we install Windows, usually, an Administrator account is created by default and its password is set to blank by default. So if we have forgotten the user accounts password, we can login by using the Administrator account.

Start the system and when you see the Windows welcome or login screen press ‘++’ keys twice and it will show a Login Box. Now type Administrator within username and leave the password field as blank. Now by pressing enter we can login to Windows.

From here, one can reset the account’s password by using the ‘User Accounts’ of ‘Control Panel’.

The same technique can be followed by using the safe mode feature. In safe mode the in-built administrator account is shown in the login screen itself.

2) Another option is to install a parallel operating system on a different partition of the same computer.  Make sure that you install the same Operating System. Now manipulate the default screen saver for the original Operating System.

  • Boot the alternate install.
  • Use Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and change the default boot instance back to your original install.
  • Open the Explorer. Browse to your original Windows folder, navigate to the %systemroot%\System32 sub-folder.
  • Save a copy of LOGON.SCR, the default logon screen saver, anywhere you like. You can also just rename the file to some other name.
  • Delete the original LOGON.SCR from the %systemroot%\system32 sub-folder. It is not necessary to delete the file if you renamed it, you can leave it there.
  • Make a copy CMD.EXE in the %systemroot%\System32 sub-folder. CMD.EXE is located in %systemroot%\system32.
  • Rename the copy of CMD.EXE to LOGON.SCR.
  • Shutdown and restart your computer. Boot into the original install.
  • Wait for the logon screen saver to initiate which will take around 15 minutes and do not move your mouse while you wait.
  • Open the CMD.EXE prompt and type net user administrator 123456
  • This will reset the local administrator password to 123456.
  • You can use any password you want.
  • Delete the LOGON.SCR from %systemroot%\System32.
  • Rename the saved default screen saver back to LOGON.SCR.
