How to Rename Music Files from iTunes

itunes_logoIf you have transferred music from your iPod/iPhone to your computer, you might have noticed that all the file name and album information related to the files is changed or displayed in unrecognized manner. This might also happen because there might not been any information added to the files earlier leading into total confusion and not able to find album or song you are looking for easily.

iTunes enables you to add or change information related to a track or album with just few clicks and keystrokes. If you are not familiar with the process of renaming or changing information of a track, continue reading to know how.

Renaming and Organizing Music files from iTunes

  • First transfer the music to a folder in your computer. If you have selected a default folder to lookup for the music, iTunes will automatically update all tracks in the music library.
  • If not click on the File menu and select add folder to the library option. Now select the folder in which you have added the music files and click OK.
  • All the music files present in that folder and sub folders will be populated in the music library. Change the view option to view files as list, if you have select other view option.
  • Now below you can see the list files that you have just added to the library.

  • Select the track you want to rename and right click on it. From the menu choose Get info option.
  • A pop up box appears with the information of the track. Click on the Info tab within the window to rename or edit other details of the track.

  • If you want to edit details of multiple tracks at a time press and hold Ctrl button and select the tracks you want to edit. Now right click on any of the selected track and select Get Info option.
  • A dialog box appears asking your conformation to edit information of multiple tracks. Click OK and proceed, again go to the Info tab in the window to edit album, album artist, artist and other information. Click OK when you are done to see the information of the selected tracks changed.

If you want to save all your music with the latest information that you have edited. Select Files –> Library –> Consolidate Library. This option will copy all your music to iTunes Music Folder so that you can select this folder to sync your iPod with iTunes to easily transfer all music with file information.

You can also download and install Godfather, an application to organize and rename iTunes files and folders.
