If you are a web developer, one issue that pops up for you every now and then is checking browser compatibility. Your potential audience might be viewing your website through different browsers like Firefox, Internet explorer, Safari or something else. And as you know, different browsers have this nasty tendency of displaying your web page in different ways.

What you generally do is that keep a host of browsers in your system and across a network of other computers and test your website on each of them, manually. Moreover, you need to do that manual stuff quite a bit as you have to check your website on browsers and different versions of them as well.  Well, that, if not anything else, is immensely time consuming.

Therefore, we have found this immensely handy free and open source  app- BrowserShot, which takes screenshots of your website in different browsers. All you have to do if copy your URL and paste it in Browsershot and check the browsers you want. You can further set up details like “Screen Size”, “Color Depth”, “Javascript”, “Java” and “Flash”.

Depending upon the options you have selected it might take a little time for the app to display all the results you require since the process, through simple for you, is a bit complicated in itself.  When you submit your URL, Browsershot adds it to a job queue. Then a network of distributed computers opens your website in their browsers, takes screenshots of your website and uploads it in a central server

Note: Another great tool for this purpose is BrowserCam, which besides offering screenshots of your website across different browsers, also offers device capture, where it mostly covers the latest smartphones (iPhone, Android phones, Windows Mobile etc). Smart feature, you gotta say! However, it’s a bit of a pricy option with the least expensive plan costing you about $40 for 3 months. The an one day pay-as-you service also costs you a minimum of $20.
