You might have seen that Ubuntu Karmic has a new xsplash that displays cool boot splash screens. You can customize this screen to display your favorite wallpaper or photo on the boot splash screen. You can also choose to display inspirational quotes instead of Ubuntu logo or display customized logo. Customizing xsplash is much easier than previous usplash.
You can find the default boot splash screen in the /usr directory if you have tweaked with the directory before. The default boot splash image will be located in /usr/share/images/xsplash directory. In this directory default image will be present in many different resolutions, this is to choose the image with screen size and resolution during boot screen start to make it display correctly.

All that you need to do to display your custom image on boot splash screen is to replace these images with your image of interest. If you know the screen size and resolution been used by the xsplash then replace that corresponding resolution image with your image of interest with same resolution. This is how ever tricky to know what is the screen size and resolution used by xsplash.
The easier way would be to replace all the resolution images with your image of interest with same resolution. You can easily change the size of images using image editing tools like photoscape, GIMP, etc. All that you need to do is just replace the images with same file name in xsplash directory. It is always better to have a backup plan if something goes wrong. Copy the contents of the xsplash directory before you make any changes to it.

You can also change the logo or add your custom logo to be displayed during boot splash screen. For this you need to change the logo files in xsplash directory with your custom quotes or logo. To make them work better you need to save them with appropriate file names.
