All Windows Operating Systems comes with Windows Media Player as a default media player. There are many other modern media players available which are packed with many great and useful features then Windows Media Player. You might be having your favorite media player installed on your computer and want to set it as your default media player.

But when you double click on any media file on your computer it opens in WMP by default. In some cases WMP asks you to download codec to play the file. There are many good media players like VLC which comes with virtually all latest codec such that you can play any video or audio file easily and also with comfort. To set your favorite media player as your default media player in Windows follow the steps below.

1) Open the folder where you have saved your music or video file that you want to open. Right click on the file and select open with from the menu and choose program.

2) A pop up window appears in that you can select the program in which you like to open the file. Remember to check the check box at the bottom of the window to set the program that you have selected has your default media player for that file type.

For example if you have selected Mp3 file and choose to open it in VLC media player and selected the check box. All the other Mp3 files from now on will open in VLC media player by default. You can choose to set a default media player for each file type like Mp3, MPEG, VOB, etc., in the media player that you feel good for each file type.

Most of the media players also ask whether you like to set it has a default media player at the time of installation. You can also choose to set your favorite media player as a default media player for select file types even at this stage of installation.
