You got a new Windows Phone 8 like Lumia 920, 820 etc. You have older version of Windows OS like Windows XP or Windows Vista. If you connect your Windows Phone to computer, Your Phone might not be recognized by Windows. You may see Driver not being installed properly When Windows tries to install drivers for Windows Phone 8.

If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8, You should be able to connect Windows Phone 8 to laptop easily using USB cable. You should see Your Windows Phone under “Portable Devices” of My Computer screen. But If you have Windows XP or Vista, You may see drivers or copying data issues with Windows Phone 8.

How to fix Windows Phone 8 USB driver issues in Windows XP/Vista
1. Make sure you have at least Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2). You can check this by right clicking on My Computer & clicking on Properties.

2. Make sure you have Windows Media Player 10 or later. You can download Windows Media Player 11 for free from Microsoft Site. If you have Windows XP 64 bit. You need to have Windows Media Player 11.

3. These latest versions of Windows Media Player have MTP capabilities. Your Windows Phone will show up under MTP devices. Connect your Windows Phone using USB cable to your PC. It tries to install drivers. If drivers are installed properly, You can access Windows Phone using Windows explorer & copy photos, videos, music, ringtones, documents to your phone.

If driver installation fails, You may see No Driver found etc. Go to Start Menu > Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. You may see your Windows Phone device as Unknown Device with an exclamation mark.

Right click on the Windows Phone device (Unknown Device) > Properties > Driver Tab > Update Driver. Click on Browse my computer for driver software. Browse to C:\Windows\Inf\ folder on your computer and Click OK. It will find the driver and install driver. You will see Windows Phone 8 as MTP device.

If you are still having problems connecting Windows Phone to Windows XP via USB, you may want to restart Windows Phone & Windows computer. Also read more about it on microsoft support site.

You can’t use Zune software with your Windows Phone 8. You can’t also use Windows Phone App for desktop with Windows XP or Vista systems.

This applies to all Windows Phone 8 Phones including Nokia Lumia 920, 820, 810, 822, 620, 610, HTC 8X, 8S, Samsung Ativ etc.

  1. This does not appear to work any more. I have a Lumia 810 and when I plug it into any XP machine it does try to install it as an MTP device but you can’t put any files on it. It shows up under My Computer as my phone name but there are no folders there when you open it and you can’t drag anything into it. :-( My feeling is that the recent update borked this functionality.

  2. Works! After Installed Windows Media Player 11, and updated the MTP device, I could access the Windows Phone properly.
