droid-appsThe latest addition to the Android legion, Motorola’s Droid has been making all the headlines since its bold launch and audacious take on the iPhone in one of the best technology teaser ads since (interestingly) Apple did the same on IBM in the famous 1984 commercial. While the Droid vs iPhone debate continues, one area we thought that the iPhone would handsomely beat Droid (and any other smartphone) was the App Store. While that still largely holds true, there are a few areas here and there where the Android Market is not scoring badly either. Here we do a quick run down on the apps that you can flaunt with your Droid when you are meeting someone from the up-market, carrying an iPhone.

Top 5 Droid applications: Our Pick

Android special apps, the Google goodies:

1. Google Sky Map:
This is your chance to play Captain Kirk. Or Jedi. Hold your Droid and point it to any part of the sky. Google Sky, then uses the phones GPS and compass censors to show you the stars or planets in your part of the planet. Besides, this app also lets you manually handle your galactic trails as well search and for that particular cosmic body in the sky.
A pocket planetarium. Quite neat.

2. Google Voice: Another Google goodie to let you taunt your iPhone freak friends. The fully functional (and free) Google Voice lets you make a call, receive a call, get access to the voicemail and Google Voice-based SMS messaging. The only thing you need is a Google Voice account.

You can do it on your iPhone? Well, my Droid does it too!

3. Twidroid: Apparently life cannot go without Twitter. So you need one for your Droid also. Twidroid steps in here. The free versions allow basic Twitter actives, like following users, viewing profiles, sending tweets. The paid version packs in a handful of other niceties like photo posting, video posting, url-shortening etc.

4. Meebo: Well, this cool app lets you tweet and manage all your IM accounts from everywhere. This app syncs all your IM accounts – Google Talk, Yahoo, My Space IM- you name it, they have it and that too at one place. Plus, if you do have a Meebo account, it has the super cool option of saving all your online chats at one place. In short it keeps you chatty.

Ahh, let’s not fight, let’s explore a few places:

5. Sherpa: This is the ideal app for you if you are looking for some cool and neat places and is too busy (or lazy) to search about them? Well, if you have a Droid and the Sherpa app in it, finding places will soon become a breeze, because Sherpa is an intuitive app which displays near-by places in a carousel under categories like “Arts & Culture”, “ Bars & Nightclubs”, ”In a Pinch”, ”On Vacation” etc.
